DEFCON is an Austrian band which despite their line up changes are still rocking like they did in the last edition of the Nova Rock festival and like they will do it again during the next Donauinsel fest in Vienna. In this interview they talked about how the Austrian people and media support music in the land of Mozart. Dig the sound of this guys, fresh, punky, electro cool!!! How is DEFCON doing after your line-up changes?
Defcon: Pretty good I say, it took a while to get used to, because we are not so many people as we used to I mean you can rely in 2 front men on stage, animating people to do shit, now is just 4 guys tied up to the microphone stand because we all sing and play but I think is nice that we changed the type of the sound we used to have, because the sound really changed from the last album.
How those changes affected you sound?
Defcon: Well the last CD was more like screamo rock and now is more like basc rock songs with a bit extra instrumentation with an electro add.
Tell us something about your latest video.
Defcon: we filmed the video in Styria, It was shooted by a video production company who are good friends of us and we decided to make like a live video combined with some stupid story haha not just a small story, and I guess it was a really cool and nice work.
How Bad Taste agency is treating you? How they help you in your work?
Defcon: They book a lot of shows for us and they helped us to find a label and they made possible to release an album way easier that´s for sure.
In Austria the summer is pretty good for bands due to the international festivals that take place here, wich are your plans for this upcoming summer?
Defcon: We will play a small stage at Nova Rock and there are a lot of other festivals as well, I mean like there are big names and there are other small festivals which are really local festivals and maybe here and there will be a show.
How Austrian people support Austrian bands or Austrian music in general?
Defcon: Sometimes I feel they are lacking of support for local bands don´t misunderstand me, but it could be better! People is cool to party and all this stuff but there is always some envy going on, back stabbing going on, It could be better is not so bad as I said before but it could be better.
How the Austrian media support local bands?
Defcon: Here to be on televion or radio you have to get in touch with ORF for example and if you don´t have contacts like those it´s always hard to get to the people, that´s weird because to get to be played there you have to pay for it which is hard for many bands in this country, If I would run that media I definitely wil go for a cuota like in Poland for example that 30% or 50% of the playlists should be from the own country but it´s not the way it works now, here you can have like lady gaga songs, or kate perry songs like 3 or 5 times an hour but well there is not Austrian music celebrity yet to be found, I think that´s pretty fucked up.
There were or still are so many good Austrian bands let´s name Rent-o-Kill, Red Lights Flash, etc… Why despite of their musical success this bands had to quit or take long breaks?
Defcon: The first problem is the Social one, there can be too a girlfriend stuff going on, like problems friendshipwise, or get fired of their jobs because of their long tours, and well they are on their 30´s and then you have to do this shitty tours and sleep in a van or in somebody´s floor or somebody´s couch it will cost you personaly, it will get you tired sooner or later, when you live a life and you live a life that way, you must have basic friendship, basic comforts and if you dont find that you won´t be happy with yourself doing it, and I mean as you mentioned RLF they are all in their 30´s so they can´t crash anybody´s couch and well all of them have girlfriends and one day they will want to get married or build a house or get a kid or two.
